On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs women's soccer team faced off against the Antelope Valley College (AVC) Marauders. The Corsairs entered the game with a 7-3-1 season record, 3-1 in the Western State Conference (WSC) South standings, and a 3-0-1 record at home. AVC entered the game atop of the WSC South standings with a 4-0 record, and they proved exactly why, beating SMC 6-0.
The game started off with a goal from the Marauders, but it wasn’t out of the Corsairs' reach just yet as that was the only goal AVC would score during the first half. The game really took a turn during the second half, more specifically after the 60-minute mark. Between the 60-minute mark and the 80-minute mark, SMC conceded five total goals, propelling AVC to their 6-0 victory. Though six goals were allowed, goalie Johana Ventureno had a good game with ten out of 16 goals being blocked.
The loss put SMC at 3-2 in the WSC South standings and a 7-4-1 overall season record. Their women’s soccer schedule features only conference games with the next one being on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the home of the College of the Canyons Cougars at 6 p.m. The Cougars currently hold a 4-1-1 WSC South record and a 3-2-1 home record. The Corsairs next home game will be on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. against the Glendale Community College Vaqueros, who currently hold a 0-6 WSC South record, and a 0-10 season record.
