Women’s Soccer Display Absolute Dominance at Home
Seven goals in the first half seals the conference game against GCC for women’s soccer.
Communication, passes, and shots on target were on point for the Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs women’s soccer team on Friday, Oct. 21 against the Glendale Community College (GCC) Vaqueros. SMC looked to redeem themselves after a loss earlier in the week, and they did exactly that. In the first half alone, the Corsairs scored seven goals and closed out the game with a 8-0 win. The win propelled them to a 9-5-1 overall record and a 5-3 Western State Conference (WSC) Southern Division record.
Forward Jacky Hernandez and midfielder Ali Alban were both key pieces in the win against GCC. Hernandez had three assists and a goal while Alban had one assist and three goals, her first hat trick of the season. The first goal came just after the 7 minute mark from midfielder Eden Bechnainou, assisted by Hernandez.
The next twelve minutes of the match included two goals from Alban, one of which from a penalty, an assist each from Hernandez and Alban, and a goal from midfielder Layla Perovich. Bechnainou added an assist to her game near the 23 minute mark when forward Emma Rierstam scored a goal of her own.
The next goal came at the 37 minute mark by Hernandez, assisted by Perovich. Three minutes later, SMC would tack on the final goal of the half from Alban, assisted by Hernandez. The Corsairs would get only one more goal in the game at the 66 minute mark from defender Maya Ten, assisted by defender Christy Vogue, finishing off the staggering 8-0 victory.
Alban reflected postgame on the win, extremely proud of herself and the team as they all really communicated well to get most of the goals together. She did acknowledge that the game could’ve gone a little faster as it did slow down a bit in the second half, but overall the performance was stellar all around. She also encourages more of an audience to watch and support.
“Everyone come out for the rest of the season, we have more home games coming up soon,” Alban said.
The women’s soccer team's next game is on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at West Los Angeles College, who the Corsairs narrowly beat last month 3-2. They look for redemption in their next home game against Bakersfield College on Friday, Oct. 28 as the Corsairs just lost 1-0 last time the two teams faced off.
