Women's Soccer Win Against West LA
The Santa Monica College Women's Soccer team scored a victory Friday against the West Los Angeles College Wildcats.
The Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsair Women's Soccer team was back in action on Friday, Sept. 30, with a 3-2 victory against a winless West Los Angeles College (WLAC) Wildcats team. The Corsairs looked fun and lively pregame, dancing a little and chanting, while West LA appeared serious and hungry for a win. From Kickoff it was SMC's game. They controlled pace and pitch and got some good shots on the goal, but West LA's defense proved capable.
At the 12 minute mark it was Corsairs captain Sophie Doumitt who struck first and knocked in a long shot from outside the box that the opposing goalkeeper couldn't stop. The West LA Wildcats weren't ready to quit, however. They got physical and West LA's #7 was yellow carded for rough play. It didn't take long after that for the Wildcats to tie it up with a goal from #12, a speedy forward who seemed able of inflicting some damage if given the chance. By half-time the score was tied 1-1.
Immediately after half-time SMC scored again with a great goal by midfielder Eden Hotch, but West LA still wasn't ready to give up. Especially #12 for the Wildcats, who looked determined and managed to score her second goal and tie the game 2-2 at the 55th minute. Things got even more physical from there on and both sides urged the ref to make some calls.
The Corsairs were particularly upset when it looked like they scored another goal, but the referee deemed that the ball never crossed the line, so the game went on. The goal scorer #12 for West LA went down with an injury not long after that and she had to be carried off the field. When the clock dwindled down to 15 minutes left midfielder Ali Alban for the Corsairs got fouled in the box and scored a penalty kick. That goal proved to be the deciding strike ending the game 3-2. After the game Ali Alban said, "We kept our heads up and never let our spirit drop."
Alban was upset that the team allowed two goals. When asked how far this team could go this year, she said, "We can win it all."
Alban also wanted to shoutout captain Doumitt who had a sizeable impact and really showed her skill Friday.
The Corsairs have a record of 6-2-1 this season. SMC traveled to Bakersfield to face Bakersfield College on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m., losing 1-0.
