Adventures From "Treasure Island"

Santa Monica College (SMC) Theatre Arts Department performed Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island on Saturday, May 21 to Sunday, May 29. Treasure Island was SMC’s second Main Stage production for the Spring 2022 semester. In contrast to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, when COVID-19 cases were declining, the pandemic affected Treasure Island. Cast and crew had to test regularly for COVID-19 and stay masked for rehearsals, but a positive case prompted discussion of performing masked for a paying audience. Ultimately, Friday’s opening night was canceled and an additional performance was added for the following Thursday. By Saturday, all cast members were cleared to perform.

Treasure Island was directed and choreographed by Terrin Adair and gave students wide opportunities for combat, comedy, singing, and dancing. Ryan Del Papa and fight choreographer Ryan Dylan Wargnier led the cast as Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, respectively.

This semester’s performances of Treasure Island have concluded, but audiences can still catch SMC’s Musical Theatre Workshop production of We Got the Beat! Tickets are $10 in advance, $13 at the door, and the cast will perform Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5. Auditions will be held Monday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 8 for Fall’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. In addition, auditions will also be held Friday, June 10 for Summer’s The Secret, We’ll Never Tell, Summer Musical Extravaganza. More information can be found at www.smc.edu/theatreauditions
