American Pacific-League Opener Ends in Loss.
Santa Monica College (SMC) football is back! After a postponed match and a week without playing, SMC returned in an away game at Pasadena City College (PCC). The SMC Corsairs took on the PCC Lancers for their first American-Pacific League game of the season on Saturday at Robinson Stadium in Pasadena, California. The Corsairs lost 17-3.
At the start of the game, the Corsairs came out strong, scoring an early field goal against the Lancers for a 3-point lead. The Corsairs managed to keep the Lancers locked down for the remainder of the first quarter, preventing them from scoring.
The first half ended with a touchdown by the Lancers, making the score 7-3. After halftime, the Corsairs struggled to maintain their form, allowing room for mistakes and giving the Lancers various opportunities.
During the halftime intermission, the Lancer Marching Band and Color Guard, famous as the main marching band in the annual Rose Parade, showed a glimpse of their show with tunes from “Sesame Street” to “The Incredibles.” Following that was more pep-style band music to pump up the crowd for the second half.
In the second half, the Lancers’ defense managed to sneak through the offensive line various times to sack Corsair quarterback Dylan Moreno, who got injured from a sack and had to step out for the remaining two downs. Then, the Lancers managed to get a field goal in the third quarter to add three points to the score.
In the final quarter, the Lancers got another touchdown to make the score 17-3. Towards the end of the game, a Corsair player was all alone running towards the end zone for a touchdown, but was ultimately stopped by a flag on the play for holding. The penalty prevented the Corsairs from scoring a touchdown.
The Corsairs (1-4) now sit on a four-game losing streak after falling short against the 5-1 Lancers. The Corsairs will host Los Angeles Southwest College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, for homecoming week.
