Winning in the Wind

SMC men’s soccer blew away the Santa Barbara Vaqueros.
Forward Jose Urdiano scored the first goal of the game 27 minutes into the first half on Wednesday, as the Corsairs men’s soccer team defeated the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros at Corsair Field. The Corsairs won 2-1 in their first conference game of the season.
With winds as high as 8 mph, the Corsairs fought hard to the end. “It was a pretty close game, got the free kick. Lucky enough to score that really helped us get our shape and get the game going,” Urdiano said.
During the second half, the Corsairs worked quickly, with forward Darren Lewis scoring the second goal 10 minutes in, bringing the lead to 2-0.
“I knew I was entering a grindy and tough match, Lewis said. “So I just wanted to do the hard work and when the ball came to me in the box, I knew I was free. I just wanted to keep my cool, stay composed, and just find the back of the net. I’m just happy I was able to help the team today.”
The Vaqueros were not backing down without a fight. The team scored a goal with 20 minutes left on the clock. Despite the challenge, the Corsairs remained determined as they continued to push through to win the game.
“I thought it was an interesting game because it was a physical game and it was, you know, tough dealing with the conditions because it was very windy, so it was hard to control the ball. I thought the guys did a great job battling just winning balls, having an intensity about them and playing tough,” said head coach Tim Pierce
