Men’s soccer ends conference season with Moorpark shutout
On Nov. 9, the men’s soccer team played against the Moorpark College Raiders in the final conference game of the season. The Corsairs won 7-0, capping off the season with a 7-win streak. Throughout the season, the team lost no games and tied once.
The Corsairs started the game strong, scoring five of their goals in the first half. Ten minutes in, forward Darren Lewis scored a point. After five more minutes, the team released a barrage of points—starting with one by midfielder Roey Kivity, quickly followed by another by forward Jason Moreno, then one more by forward Jose Urdiano—all in less than five-minute intervals. The Corsairs ended the first half with another goal by Urdiano.
The second half was equally exciting, and gave the Corsairs an additional two points. A little over halfway through the period, forward Philip Hephzibah scored once, bringing the rest of the team to an enthusiastic celebration. Towards the end, Kivity scored one more goal. He made an impressive backwards shot that kept the ball rolling slowly, but surely. With the goal unguarded, it rolled neatly into the net in a comedic but well-deserved goal, giving the team a landslide victory to boast about.
With 21 players present on the team that day, the whole game involved them switching players out between performing on-field and cheering from the reserves, as all players ended up playing. “Everyone wanted to get their minutes and do their work. Everyone was doing their part. Even the players coming from the bench made a big impact on the game,” said Kivity, who scored one goal in each half.
After the game, Head Coach Tim Pierce talked about his decision to let everyone on the team play on field. “It’s the last game of the year, and I got everybody in the game, so I was really excited about that,” he said. “We played 21 players today, and I thought everybody performed really, really well.”
Pierce also mentioned the team’s next challenge: playoffs. “This was our last game before the playoffs, so I wanted to make sure that we’re focused. That would be the big challenge.”
