Angel City FC Win Against America 3-0
On Wednesday, March 8, Angel City FC (ACFC) played their first public match against Club América (Las Águilas) Femenil. This match was played as an international preseason friendly, meaning that the results were not counted toward record. The match was held at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Angel City FC would emerge victorious, smashing Club América three to nil.
Rookie Forward Alyssa Thompson scored the first goal of the match. She was able to skillfully evade the last defender in her path and toe tap the ball through the hands of opposing Goalkeeper, Itzel González. Within the first 5 minutes of the contest, Thompson had scored her first goal of the season and her professional career.
In the 16th minute, ACFC had another chance to add to the lead. Defender Paige Nielsen took a power shot from outside the box, but the shot was tipped over the post by Goalkeeper González.
Towards the end of the first half, Las Águilas had a shot to tie the game when ACFC goalkeeper Didi Haračić punched the ball away from Águilas forward Katy Martínez. The ball was rebounded to Águilas defender Sabrina Enciso and took the shot but went wide. This ended the first half one to nil in favor of ACFC.
In honor of International Women’s Day, a mariachi made up of women called Mariachi Las Catrinas performed during halftime. They played the Himno Nacional Mexicano at the beginning of the match for the Mexican team Club América Femenil.
The second half of the match started with ACFC scoring another goal in the 56th minute. Forward Claire Emsile centered the ball that was previously blocked by the opposing Goalkeeper González. This was rebounded to Defender Megan Reid to finish off the goal.
In the 86th minute, ACFC forward Simone Charley, who was substituted on for Thompson, would receive a pass then sprint past Águilas defenders. She would then get the ball past the substituted Águila keeper Itzel Velasco to extend ACFC’s lead to 3-0 The game would end three to nil in favor of the Angel City FC.
Angel City FC return to BMO Stadium on Sunday, March 26, at 6pm for their regular season opener against the NY Gotham FC.
