On Sept. 23, 2023, SMC will be holding a coastal cleanup event at the historic Inkwell beach as part of Coastal Cleanup Day, which is California’s largest annual volunteer event.

Volunteers will meet at Santa Monica Beach Tower 20 on Pico Blvd. and Bay St. in Santa Monica starting at 9 A.M. Gloves, buckets, and safety training will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sunscreen, a hat, mask, and reusable water-bottle.

The Inkwell beach is an adopted site by SMC, who are leading the cleanup efforts for the site in collaboration with SMC’s Sustainability Center.

SMC’s Black Collegians and Adelante Club are partnering with the Black Surfers Collective and the Black Historians to clean the Inkwell, a historically Black beach that was significant in the fight against segregation during the Jim Crow era.

Biking, walking or taking public transit to the beach is encouraged by SMC. If participants are driving, parking passes may be requested at the parking lot entrance between Bay St. and Bicknell St.

In 2019, a total of 819 volunteers participated in the cleanup at the Inkwell, according to an SMC press release. Across all of the sites in Los Angeles County, 13,914 volunteers collected 30,000 pounds of trash from local creeks, beaches, and parks.
