Shutout At Corsair Field
The Corsairs from Santa Monica College (SMC) women's soccer returned home to host the Monarchs of the Los Angeles Valley College for their thirteenth conference match of the season. The match took place at the Corsair Field in Santa Monica, California, on Tuesday, November 12. The Corsairs beat the Monarchs 7-0, keeping them first in the southern division of the 2024 Western State Conference, tightly followed by College of the Canyons and Citrus College.
The Corsairs were dominant in the first half of the game with five goals scored within 45 minutes. Corsairs’ midfielder Karla Torres opened the game with the first goal assisted by forward Valeria Romo in the eleventh minute. Shortly after, Torres scored again making it 2-0 in under 20 minutes. Within two minutes, Corsairs strengthened their lead making it 3-0 from midfielder Jacibe Martinez.
With 10 minutes left in the half, Corsairs’ Izzy Turner scored the undisputed goal of the match close from the middle of the pitch. Turner, who is a defender, (a position normally not known for scoring goals) took a crack at the ball when Monarch goalie Nina Diaz was slightly outside the goal area and scored over Diaz’s head. This was Turner’s first goal for the Corsairs this season. Corsair midfielder Hazel Caro closed off the first half with their fifth goal of the game.
Once the second half started, Corsairs began to slow down, giving the Monarchs a few chances but still remained dominant for a majority of the match. The second half saw two Corsair freshmen Alexis Poepplau and Alysa Bagdasaryan score their first goal with the team late in the half. Corsairs won 7-0, shutting out the Monarchs.
SMC (10-1-3) is currently at the top of the conference, closely followed by the College of the Canyons (10-2-2). The Corsairs have one more remaining conference match against Antelope Valley at 3 PM on Friday, Nov. 15 at home.
