False Alarm: Police respond to prop gun
About 12 police officers from the Santa Monica Police Department and Santa Monica College Police Department detained an SMC student after responding to reports of a gunman only to release him after they learned the gun was fake. The student was cooperative with the officers; he was detained and searched. Police found a prop gun amidst his personal belongings. The student said it was from an acting class.
Officers from both city and college departments searched the campus and detained the unidentified student near the Letters and Sciences building.
Witnesses had reported a gunman in a parking structure on the campus Wednesday afternoon, according to SMPD.
