Truck hits hydrant on Colorado

A trash truck, while turning left out of an alley onto Colorado Boulevard headed eastbound, ran into a fire hydrant, creating a sprout of water that shot 50 feet in the air, officials said Wednesday afternoon.

The truck "sheered the hydrant off its spool," said Jesse Ceseña, employee of Doty Bros., a pipeline contracting company, resulting in the geyser-like stream.

As a result of the impact, one to three feet of water from the hydrant filled the flattened roof of a building, seemingly belonging to a business named Bay Films, and spilled onto the ground and into the street via a drainage spout in the corner of the building.

The street was closed between Sixth and Seventh streets. Santa Monica police, fire and city officials worked to fix the hydrant and clean the street of excess water.
