Bicyclist hit by car at SMC main entrance

A bicyclist heading eastbound on Pico Boulevard was thrown off his bicycle Thursday morning when a vehicle hit him in front of Santa Monica College.

From 7:45 a.m. to roughly 8 a.m., both the Santa Monica Police Department and Santa Monica College Police Department were on scene. The injured bicyclist remained immobile in the middle of the street while paramedics tended to his injuries and transported him to a local hospital.

SMCPD responded and blocked the main entrance to the college, as well as two entryways to the parking structures on Pico Boulevard.

The driver responsible for the accident was a young woman, an SMC student, who was accompanied by a young man. Both were on their way to school. There was no visible damage to the driver's car.

The only apparent witness to the event was an SMC crossing guard, who declined to comment on the accident and instead referred to the campus police for answers.

SMCPD, however, stated that the SMPD are in charge of the investigation and did not have any other information to offer.

When the SMPD was asked at the scene of the accident to comment, they had no other comment other than what they had just seen.

The status of the victim is unknown at this time.
