Mayra Jovic of SMC Women's Tennis earns WSC Player of the Year Award
Last Saturday as the Santa Monica College women's tennis team competed in conference playoffs, Mayra Jovic of SMC was awarded the Western State Conference "Player of the Year" award. Jovic, who entered Saturday's competition seeded first in women's singles, and doubles--with her teammate Izabel "Naz" Nazdracheva, advanced to Finals of the single draw and Semifinals in doubles.
Both Jovic (12-0) and Nazdracheva (10-3) were awarded WSC All-Conference single's positions #1 and #2 accordingly, and together (12-0) were awarded WSC All-Conference team #1 in the doubles bracket.
This Friday, the ladies will compete together in the Semifinal round of women's doubles at 2:00 p.m. at Ventura College, and if they win they advance to the Finals round that day at 4:00 p.m.
Mayra Jovic will be competing alone in the women's singles final against Glendale's Amy Shigenaga at 11:00 a.m.
As the Western State Conference Championships qualify players for the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Regional/State Championships, a total of six SMC players have made the cut.
Together, Elin Nyberg and Lauren Voiers qualified for women's doubles along with a tag-team of Shawntel Patterson and Sammie Xiao. Jovic will be competing in singles, and will compete in doubles with her partner Nazdracheva.
The CCCAA Regional/State Championships will be held at 115th Annual Ojai Tennis Tournament later this month.
