Dr. Seuss Comes to SMC With All His Friends
Dr. Seuss' characters come to life in flavorful personas of the famous childhood characters. The Cat in the Hat spotlights the musical "Seussical," as it makes its way to Santa Monica College just before spring break.
The production enables a great appreciation for Dr. Seuss and his magical stories. Other major characters in the show include Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and Lazy Mayzie.
"The audition was back on the first day of the semester, Feb. 14," remembers Judy Louss, theater department secretary.
With musical numbers that will definitely bring the characters back to life in the minds of fans, as well as stretch the imagination with vivid scenes from Dr. Seuss' stories, grab your three wheelers and kick that Cat out of your house.
Stephen Flaherty composed the music, with the lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. They created a whimsical world that includes pop, gospel, blues and R&B.
Imaginative actors will play the roles based on the childhood tales. Apparently the musical incorporates essential story elements from at least 15 of his books.
By weaving the stories together, a fruitful combination of ecstatic characters will be revealed. "The musical should be a great opportunity for viewers to remember all the characters brought to life," said student Jael Romero.
"Seussical" originally opened in November 2000 and re-opens March 25, 26 and April 1 and 2 at 7 p.m, at the SMC Hangar Stage. The matinee performances are on March 26, April 2, 3 at 1 p.m. The general admission price for SMC students is $10.
