Corsairs Comeback Falls Short Against Renegades

It has been a up and down season so far for the Santa Monica Corsairs Women's basketball team. The Corsairs hosted the Bakersfield Renegades on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at the SMC Pavilion in Santa Monica, Calif. to begin their second game of conference play.

The reigning conference champs from last year were being outmatched in the opening frame of the game when the Renegades put on a clinic with a very lopsided 23-5 lead. The Corsairs managed to turn things around in the second quarter however, as they endured a run that closed the gap by 10 points and trailed 40-30 at half-time.

When the second half began, both teams traded blows one after another, while the Renegades maintained their lead. By midway through the fourth quarter, the Corsairs managed to get within as close as four points away midway through the third quarter, but that was all they could muster. The crowd was into it, cheering on their Corsairs to make the comeback come to fruition, but it wasn't enough, the Renegades holding on to win the game 72-62. This game gave the Renegades their third straight win, while the Corsairs are still trying to end their losing streak and defend their title.

Jessica Melamed finished with 23 points after finishing 7 of 19 from the field and 4 of 9 on three-point attempts. Jinea Cole finished second in scoring with 14 points, while both Luna Rivera and Angelina Moreno finished with five rebounds respectively. The Corsairs will go on the road at the College of the Canyons on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
