From Blowout to Breakout

The Corsairs shake off early season malaise in conference win against Glendale.
The Santa Monica College (SMC) women’s soccer team dominated from start to finish against the Glendale College Vaqueros in their first conference game of the season on Tuesday at Corsair Field. The final score was nowhere close, and they made it look easy, winning 9-0.
It wasn’t just the offense that made the Corsairs so dominant in the game. The Vaqueros never even got the chance to shoot against SMC, let alone score. Nearly the entire 90 minutes of game time took place on the Vaqueros’ side of the field.
The only time the ball ever came near Corsair goalkeepers Giorgia Sterza and Yahira Ruvalcaba was when the ball comfortably drifted into their arms. On the rare instances that happened, they peacefully rolled it back toward their teammates, who continued their nonstop assault against the Vaqueros.
One of the main advantages the Corsairs had was a better mentality. From the very outset of the game, there was a clear hunger to win, one that didn’t let up until the game had finally run its course. Even with only five minutes left in the game, the Corsairs were still scoring.
Head Coach Aaron Benditson was very pleased with his players’ performance. “It was great to score a lot of goals. I think our team really needed it” he said. So far this season, SMC had only ever lost or tied a game, never won, so to open up conference play with such a dominant showing was an extreme confidence boost.
