Is body image still a growing problem for college women?
On a daily basis, millions of women are frustrated by the way they feel about themselves and the self-esteem bar starts to go down. You start having problems with they way you look, the way you want to look, and the way you should look. As a female, we were raised to love ourselves, be anything you want to be, strive for a higher education and settle down with a person who loves you for who you are.
But when you hold an issue towards yourself, it's hardly likely that you will love yourself, especially if you're struggling to accept the way you look. There are so many women out there that have a normal weight, that eat healthy, but they feel fat.
"Women in their teens and 20s who are constructing their adult feminine identities and trying to establish sexual relationships are particularly vulnerable to developing body-image concerns," said Mary K. McKinney, a senior staff psychologist at the University of Michigan Psychological Clinic in an interview with USA Today.
With that said, why are women so afraid to accept the way they look? Is it because the media advertises plastic surgery and self-enhancing drugs to make us feel better about ourselves? Or is it because we see plastic surgery and body enhancements as normal?
"I feel self-conscious about certain attributes of myself, however every person has one thing about themselves that they don't necessarily love," said Santa Monica College student May Rafiei. "The media plays a huge role in how young girls feel they should look and how they feel about themselves. Having a positive overall self image is a difficult, yet satisfying accomplishment."
Some ways that females can respond to an issue regarding your appearance is to first acknowledge the fact that not everyone is perfect and to grow and learn from it. Another way is to accept yourself. Take a look in a mirror and pinpoint the things you dislike about yourself and accept it.On a daily basis, millions of women are frustrated by the way they feel about themselves and the self-esteem bar starts to go down. "I wake up every morning and stare at myself in the mirror, looking for wrinkles that need to be fixed, my fat on my thighs to vanish and I think about Jessica Alba, and I idolize her beauty and wish that I can be her," said an anonymous female student.
